ABOUT THE DJ
Born and raised in good old Birmingham, United Kingdom, i was brought up on reggae, as my elder brother was a original 70,s English rastaman and my 1st experience of music was of the " home made " sound systems from back in the day. I developed a love, and still have , a love of Roots Rock Steppers / Toasting and Lovers rock. From the age of 14 i was a " box boy " and vinyl selector for a local sound system and used to travel all over the country with " Rebel sound " . After leaving school, i would spend my spare YTS money on a 12" and the majority of the times, it would be a mellow 2 step tune ( hence my name)
About this time the big thing was disco, and i like nearly everybody else was jumping on this band wagon. This was done in "secret" to begin with, as i didn,t want to be seen as a " baldhead" though it wasn,t long before all nations was on this tip. The next 5 years would be spent buying Roots/Lovers and Soul/Disco. Also at this time the big thing also was Blues/allnighters for Reggae and alldayers for the Soul. It wasn,t unusual to do a allnighter on the Saturday, then get a few hours kip and then travel to a alldayer. The only plus point was that the best alldayers tended to be on my doorstep in Birmingham centre. I was also doing my catering apprenticeship at this time as well....
I love live concerts and have been honoured to have seen all the greats, from Marvin Gaye to Bob Marley to Luther Vandross. This side is still a weakness for me, as i still regularly support unsigned/independant artists and always try and portion a percentage of my show to these artists.
My 1st Dj break came when a old school friend said he was starting up a pirate radio station, which was a new thing at the time, as i,d only heard of 1 other which came and went within a few weeks. My music selection was Steppers and Lovers rock with a sprinkling of some unheard of Soul thrown into the mix .The station was on for 6 months .
At the begining of the 90,s i made the trip down to London permanently. This was the begining of another deep love. At this time the big thing down there was Rare Grooves, the type of music i was playing a few years back, only it wasn,t known as Rare Grooves at the time. My time down there was 4 years, yet it will stay with me for a lifetime. I,ve carried on buying music but not on the scale as i was as a youngster, as the queen and goverment has got a stronger say as to where my money has to go now.
So allow me to jog your memories or introduce something new to you.
Soulfully
