ABOUT THE DJ
Nil's Profile:
My name is Nilesh or DJ Neil. Since the age of 16 I have been listening to dance music. As soon as I could save up enough money I would go to the local record shop and buy whatever was new. In the early days it was strangely enough Rumbelows on Hounslow High Street who had a vinyl section at the back of the shop amongst the Hoovers and washing machines!! and another shop called Memory Discs. My early influences were Radio Luxembourg, the legendary Soul Spectrum show on Capital radio with Greg Edwards, Robbie Vincent, JFM radio and Solar Radio. I started a mobile disco and called it Distincshun Roadshow, and DJ Onx and myself still remain as members to this day, minus all the speakers!! Bluebird Records in Paddington was where we bought all our music from until it sadly closed. That shop was an education in itself, having met so many important people in that shop who went onto big things. Priorities in life changed with marriage and kids taking the place of 12's and Albums and the music went into storage. Recent changes in my life threw me back into my music and over the last few years all the vinyl has come out of storage; along with i-Tunes and Soul Brother Records the passion to share the vibe has been re-ignited
Dave Marley has been kind enough to give me a platform again and I am excited to share my passion with so many like minded people right here on JFSR every Saturday morning from 9am -12pm
Onx's Profile:
I grew up in West London and as a boy in the late 70’s and early 80’s always listened to dance music and was into the Disco scene. My favourites were Earth Wind and Fire, The Jacksons, O’Jays, Temptations, Stevie Wonder and of course Light of the World and Level 42
All my pocket money was spent on buying the latest tunes and I was building up quite a collection. I was known to friends and family as the guy who “had all the tunes” and was asked to DJ on many occasions. My best mate and neighbour DJ Neil also had the same taste and passion for music. We soon combined our resources and started buying records together and the record collection grew and grew. We started to DJ as The Distincshun Sound System. Our rep grew very quickly and we went from doing birthdays and special occasions to organising our own Jazz-Funk events
At the time like most DJ’s on JFSR I listened to Greg Edwards, Robbie Vincent and Steve Walsh to catch the latest releases and visited London’s exclusive Bluebird Records too often and spent all my money!
After school Distincshun became really popular and we were busy playing out every Friday and Saturday and at the same time attending Hounslow Borough College. A great time and place to be because Disco was turning into Jazz Funk and Soul. We were playing the latest tunes UK and Stateside and the dance scene was really kicking. We played at the Student Union and at The Milford Arms Isleworth, Jacksons night club Staines, Leinster Hotel Bayswater, Harrow Leisure Centre, Osterley Comfort just to name a few. Special guest at our gigs included The Cool Notes, Direct Drive, The Breakfast Band and Phillip Bent as well as Capital Radio’s Steve Jackson
I got married at 20 years old!! And a career in accountancy took over and the vinyl and speakers were put into storage. I’ve always kept up with the music though building on the original library of tunes, visiting Soul Brother Records when I can
Distincshun stopped playing out in 1985 but somehow in 2004 the spirit was re-ignited and me and DJ Neil started gigging again! Events at IGK and a residency at Jolly Wagner’s got us back to our old ways! But this time it was all about quality not quantity
Distincshun went on to present a show on Urban Jazz Radio in 2009 and the best part of 2010 but due to constraints that had to stop. We have been given a chance with the JFSR Family and it’s time to enjoy and make the most of it
