ABOUT THE DJ
I don’t recall any memories of a time prior to being engrossed in music. As a preschooler growing up in Brooklyn, NY, my Dad presented me with a stack of 45s and a kiddie record player to play them on; indeed, that was all it took to hook me for life. I realized later that dear ol' Dad was likely keeping me supplied with records of my own in an attempt to keep me out of his stacks and as far from his stereo as humanly possible. His plans didn’t quite work out the way he'd hoped, however. The moment he left for work each morning, I’d repeat what I saw him do on weekends - I’d fiddle with the switches & knobs on his receiver, lift the dust cover off his turntable (a Garrard changer), unhook the tone-arm and proceed to spend the day playing my way through his 45s. Funny, Mom heard it all and never said a word
By the time I was five, I was making replicas of singles I wanted out of construction paper and crayons. My folks would take the mock-up to the store, show the clerk and come back home with the real thing. Not a bad system, eh?
For my birthday in 1985, I bought my first DJ mixer to go with the turntable I’d received the year before. I took the liberty of combining Dad's deck with my own and the new mixer, creating my very first full-fledged DJ rig
In high school I made the leap from "bedroom" to "mobile" when I landed my first paying gig. By the time college rolled around I'd gotten a job as a singles buyer for a music retailer, working nights while taking audio engineering courses by day, and taking whatever DJ work I could find on the weekends
After spending years in the industry as an engineer, burgeoning family obligations meant significantly less time behind the decks; but since I missed spinning my records, I found the perfect outlet for my DJ energies in YouTube. Inspired by vinyl videos from JFSR's own Vinyl Morpher, et al, I began showcasing favorites from my collection. Nearly 700 videos, three channels and millions of video views later, I'd finally found my audience and, ultimately, a connection to JFSR
I am truly blessed to be afforded the opportunity to share the music I love with like-minded listeners as a DJ/presenter at Jazz Funk Soul Radio
