THE JURASSIC COAST

The magnificent Dorset coast World Heritage site covers 95 miles of England’s most stunning coastline, stretching from Dorset to East Devon. It’s called the Jurassic coast due to its amazing rock formations dating from over 185 million years ago, spanning the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.

The South West coast path is the most infamous National trail, which runs the full length of the coastline. It offers breathtaking views, with wide expanses of ocean, sandy coves, bizarre rock formations and dramatic cliff faces.

It’s a magical part of the country, and The Ilchester Arms is fortunate enough to be nestled right on the edge of this natural beauty. A walk onto Chesil beach starts from the path at the back of our pub garden, taking you up to St Catherines chapel which overlooks Abbotsbury on one side and the magnificent coastline on the other. You can then walk further onto the beach and continue exploring to your hearts content.
